Professional basketballer suspended for one month for anti-doping rule violation

  • News

The Sports Tribunal suspended an athlete for returning a positive test for MDMA. The Sports Anti-Doping Rules 2021 recognises “substances of abuse” and provides for a reduced sanction if an athlete completes an approved treatment programme. As MDMA is a substance of abuse and was taken prior to competition not for a sports performance reason, the athlete must complete the Drug-Free Sport NZ-approved drug treatment programme underway, or 3 months’ suspension will apply.
